Response to On ****Media

Images are used to capture and create moments that will evoke any number of targeted emotions and can even motivate action among audience members. Video in particular helps to create an experience for the audience as it includes visuals and sound that can be edited together to create a feeling. Images and sound act as a universal language that speak by connecting to viewers on a subconscious level. Constructed reality or not, the impact is real. As the world is becoming more technologically advanced, artists are shifting their mentalities away from tradition to incorporate more in the realm of generative art. As civil war paintings became journalistic photographs, journalistic photographs are becoming four-sense experiences. Whether it’s because more digital resources are available that will better serve artistic pieces or whether it’s that our minds are more naturally evolving to interpret newer mediums, this shift is becoming an artistic reality. I hope art doesn’t become more technological for the sake of being technological. I found it interesting that even silent movies were considered multimedia. I always assumed multimedia was a more recent development, inspired by a more updated world. But during the silent movie era, overlaying sound with text and images was breakthrough. When used effectively, I believe multimedia can help release artistic visions to create something new and inspiring. Multimedia has existed for a while, now on a much bigger scale. I fear though, that art could potentially become more about the medium itself than the ideas being expressed.
